PAUL TAN

Design Partner

Paul graduated from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 1985. During his internship he worked with South Yarra Collaborative in Melbourne. Following his graduation, Paul joined Peck, Denton, Corker, Marshall in Melbourne as architectural designer.

Upon his return to Indonesia in 1984 he joined Hellmuth, Obata, Kassabaum Hong Kong and Parama to become Project Architect on the Grand Hyatt/Plaza Indonesia project in Jakarta. In 1990, Paul joined an architectural firm in Hong Kong as Partner until 1995. Since then, the regional offices under his direction were grouped as ARKdesign with offices in Singapore, Jakarta and Perth. These groups of design firms operate in Australia as ARKdesign Australia under the direction of Design Associate John Banton.

ARKdesign operates on the notion that design, project administration and company management, must act as one smooth operating system, to ensure the success of a project. Each element has its role play in the process to transform architectural thought to materialization.

Paul wrote about his architectural journey of two decades from Australia to Asia in a book titled "On Above and Beyond", 2009.

In 2012, the Australian Government awarded Paul, the Australian Alumni Award for "Excellence in Media, Culture and the Arts".

Today, ARKdesign Architects run its practice with 30 architects, designers and architectural engineers from the Jakarta office, designing mixed use / high rise projects, resorts, hotels and condominiums in the South East Asian region.
